Walking Routes through the City of Hradec Králové

walking_routes_640x480.jpg If you want to visit the most beautiful spots in Hradec Králové and get to know some of its history, just set out on one of the four walking routes. Hradec Králové is often referred to as an “open air architecture textbook”, because the architectural sites of the city map out the periods from Gothic up to contemporary times. The walking routes focus on individual periods of the architectural development of the city. On every route you will find colour coordinated stands providing you with information about the most interesting sights which can be seen around you. Moreover, you can discover what the city used to look like years ago thanks to historic photographs on the stands of Routes I, II and III. Inquisitive children can look forward to the “Fun with Hradec Králové” brochure and smartphone enthusiasts can take part in the Munzee outdoor game. Routes II, III and IV can also be enjoyed from a bicycle saddle.

I. Walking Route “Historical Town” – brown colour

The 2.5 km-long route around the historical town takes over 1.5 hours at a gentle walking pace. The first of the 13 stops can be found in front of the Tourist Information Centre on the Large Square close to the Holy Spirit Cathedral. When strolling through the old town and its romantic spots you will see the best of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles.

II. Walking Route “Salon of the Republic” – colour silver

The 3.5 km-long route around the modern city takes about 2 hours at a gentle walking pace. The first of the 11 stops can be found in front of the Museum of Eastern Bohemia on Eliška’s Embankment. While strolling along the monumental embankments and pedestrian boulevards you will come to realise why the unique urban concept and structures designed by Kotěra, Gočár and other significant architects of the early 20th century led to the city deservedly being named the Salon of the Republic.

III. Walking Route “Stronghold” – colour red

The 5.5 km-long route exploring the former Baroque stronghold takes over 2.5 hours at a gentle walking pace. The first of the 11 stops can be found in front of the Museum of Eastern Bohemia on Eliška’s Embankment. Only a few structures have been preserved from the Baroque stronghold, which was demolished after the 1866 Battle near Hradec Králové, and our walking route will take you to 20 of them.

IV. Walking Route “Contemporary Architecture” – colour black

The 7 km-long route exploring the architecture of the late 20th and early 21st century takes about 3 hours at a gentle walking pace. The first of the 12 stops can be found above the Náplavka Elbe Riverbank on Svobody Square. Do not hesitate to enter the modern premises of the Public Transport Terminal or the Study and Research Library or enjoy the refreshing greenery of Šimek’s Park and the Southern Terraces of the bustling city.
